In 2007 Derek was elected alongside Bill Perrie in Renfrew North, leading the SNP to form the Administration of Renfrewshire Council and become Leader of the Council and Chair of the Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership.
Councillor Derek Mackay has lived in Renfrew all his life, and is married with two sons. First elected for Ward 26 in 1999, he increased his majority in 2003 taking 64% of the vote. He was a Renfrew Community Councillor until 1999 and was previously Vice Chair of Renfrew Crime Prevention Panel.
He has lead a number of local campaigns and was said by the Paisley Daily Express to be 'a respected councillor who is viewed by many SNP colleagues as one of the party's brightest young politicians. (PDE 18/07/06)'
Described by the Standards Commission as a long-standing and very well respected Councillor.
Derek says
"The time has come to make Renfrew matter. The elections in May 2007 present Renfrew a real opportunity to win and call an end to misrule.
We have the energy and ideas to change the town and the county which bears its name for the better."
